NDIS funding for mobility tricycles in Australia: a practical guide
A tricycle may be worth discussing when disability-related needs affect your mobility or participation. Buying an electric tricycle does not automatically qualify for NDIS funding.
Start with your disability-related needs
The NDIA considers disability needs, goals, supporting evidence and whether another funding source is more appropriate. Funding must meet its reasonable-and-necessary requirements and be an NDIS support. See the official assistive technology guidance.
Describe the activity you want to do, the barrier you face and the assistance you currently require. For example, explain the route, distance and support involved in a local community outing. A clear description of your needs is more useful than choosing a model first.
Talk to an assistive technology advisor
Ask an advisor to help assess whether a tricycle is suitable and what evidence is needed for your circumstances. A trial can explore mounting, pedal reach, steering, braking and support needs. It can also show whether a different mobility option would be more suitable.
Your assessment should consider the proposed environment and the rider’s ability to use the equipment safely. Three wheels can tip. An electric motor does not remove the need for safe steering, braking and training.
Prepare for a useful trial
- Bring your usual footwear and any information your advisor requests.
- Check transfers, seating support and reach to the controls.
- Try starting, stopping and slow turns under suitable supervision.
- Measure gates, storage space and any transport access.
- Discuss charging, maintenance and who will provide help when needed.
Request an itemised quote
Ask Trike Bike Australia to identify the exact model and size, any required accessories, assembly and freight. Keep the quote and trial notes together. Discuss whether each item is necessary for your intended use, and confirm the approval and payment process before ordering.
A retailer’s quote provides equipment information; it does not replace an assessment or a funding decision. We can assist with product details and a test ride, while your advisor and the relevant funding decision-maker address suitability and approval.
Confirm your plan before paying
Ask your NDIA contact or plan manager what your plan permits and whether approval is required. Do not assume a budget balance means this purchase can be claimed. Retain written confirmation, the final quote and purchase records.
